You must have read the July 95 Issue of MacUser like I have! Since we all have to wait for the release of System 8, why not enjoy the icons now? With a little ResEdit-ing and a lot of eye-balling, I spent a while making these icons. Personally, I don't know if I will change to System 8, considering I now have my nice-looking replacement icons. *sigh*
To make the 3-D look more complete, try out Greg's Buttons. It already has the Espy font which System 8 will use as the system font.
I felt there was no real way to get the true look of the "Hi-tech" look and feel, just by looking in MacUser. That is why I have not attempted to make the "Hi-tech" set of icons.
The Catch
Do you like these icons? Would you like to see System 8 (codename Copland) released sooner, and without 68K support? or later with 68K support? Would you like to see it in 68K at all? There must be at least a few hundred thousand non-Power Macintosh computer owners out there.. Unite, simply mail/email Apple telling them that you want a non-Power Mac version of System 8.... and send a copy of your letter to me.
How to use these files
•The 'System 8 Finder icons' folder contains the icons you would usually copy and paste onto your own folders (aka custom icons).
•The 'System 8 Resource Icons' file contains the icons you can use to customize the look of your System. To install them in the System file, you may follow these steps:
Copy your System file onto your desktop. Open the 'System 8 Resource Icons' file in ResEdit. From the Edit menu, choose "Select All". Now choose "Copy" and close the 'System 8 Resource Icons' file. Open the _COPY_ of the System file that you should now have on your desktop. Choose "Paste", when ResEdit asks about duplicate resource ID's, select the "Yes" button. "Save" and then "Close" your System file.
Now that you have made it this far... Drag your current System file into the Trash. Drag the duplicate System file (with the new icons in it) into your System Folder. You cannot empty the trash until you have rebooted. Once the Finder starts up, you can now empty the Trash and enjoy the new icons!
•The 'System 8 Window Defs' file contains icons that could conceivably be used in a CDEF or WDEF. (Look in the icsX resources. iclX's are included for simplified editing.) At the present time, I don't have the knowledge to make them. Any sample CDEF and/or WDEF in C would be appreciated.
Bugs?
The only cosmetic error you will encounter is in the Standard File dialog. The "New Folder" button usually has an icon next to it. This icon will appear to be misplaced when using my icons.
Disclaimer:
If you have never modified your System or used ResEdit before, be very cautious. I have been using these icons with no side-effects. I am not telling you to make these changes to your System file. These are steps that someone would take to install these icons. In other words, don't email me telling me that your System does not work because of my icons. If my instructions are not clear, seek an expert. *sarcastic grin*
